Lalu Prasad Shaw

About

Lalu Prasad Shaw is a distinguished figure in Indian contemporary art, celebrated for his ability to blend traditional heritage with a refined, modern aesthetic. Born in 1937 in Suri, Bengal, Shaw received his formal training at the Government College of Art and Craft in Kolkata. His early education was shaped by the guidance of legendary teachers and a deep study of diverse influences, including the Ajanta cave frescos, Kalighat temple paintings, and the Company School of art.

While he is a master of many mediums, Shaw is most famous for his highly stylized portraits of the Bengali middle class. His paintings, often executed in tempera or gouache, feature men, women, and couples captured in quiet, formal poses. These characters are typically shown in profile, a nod to Mughal miniature traditions, and are framed within elegant borders. What makes his work stand out is the "economy of line"; with just a few precise strokes and harmonious blocks of color, he captures the deep expressions and physical traits of his subjects, making them feel both still and incredibly lifelike.
