Viren Tanwar is a distinguished contemporary Indian artist known for his ability to merge traditional aesthetics with a modern, often satirical, narrative. Born in 1952 in Hisar, Haryana, Tanwar’s early talent was evident during his studies at the Government College of Art in Chandigarh, where he consistently ranked at the top of his class. He later expanded his artistic horizons internationally, studying at the prestigious Slade School of Fine Art in London under a British Council Scholarship.
Tanwar’s work is a vibrant reflection of life’s dualities, balancing joy with harshness and complexity with simplicity. His style is deeply influenced by his rural upbringing in Haryana, where he was exposed to traditional fabric-dyeing techniques like Bandhej and Lahariya. These childhood memories, combined with the structural elegance of Pahari miniatures and the fluid lines of Ajanta murals, give his canvases a unique visual language. He often incorporates decorative borders, known as hashiyas, which frame his subjects and root them in Indian heritage.
His subject matter is incredibly diverse, ranging from the spiritual and sensual to the everyday. He frequently depicts acrobats, performers, and religious figures, using a play of light and shade to create a sense of theater. There is often a touch of humor or social commentary in his work, making his brightly colored paintings intellectually engaging.
With a career spanning several decades, Tanwar has exhibited in major global cities, including New York, London, Berlin, and Singapore. His works have been featured in high-profile auctions at Sotheby’s and Bonhams and are held in prestigious collections like the National Gallery of Modern Art in New Delhi. Today, he lives and works near Delhi, continuing to influence the Indian art scene.
